In October, with Smart village project, VT THAI and a few start up groups and TV production such as Localalike, Penguint and TV Thunder visited the minority known as ‘Pao Mien’ or ‘Pao Yao’ in Doi Mae Sarong, Chiangrai to help and support them in equipment and food. Mien people originally from China and some of them migrated to Thailand and Laos. They maintain their culture, identity, language and culture norms and ways of Mien’s living.
Mien’s traditionally- dress, women wear intricately-embroidered black blouses and pleated skirts or pants, embroidered turbans or pointed black hat, silver coin jewelry, and distinctive bright red or pink’ puffs around their necks. And men wear tunic jacket and loose trousers and black embroidered caps similar in appearance to skull caps worn by some Muslims.
In every household generally do agriculture for living. Apart from cultivation, women also do weaving, embroidery and cloth making. Their distinctive embroidery and braiding is made with cotton in cross stitch pattern, which shape and pattern inspired by things and beauty of nature that they have seen while doing a field work in everyday life. Their embroidered cloth and scarf are exquisite. Each item is produced with delicate care which is seldom seen in nowadays therefore created a unique product.
To enhance the product value and support them, VT THAI and Thai designer have planned to collaborate with Mien artisan creating a new product design by using Mien’s exquisite embroidered cloth incorporated with wickerwork.
